Khaya Mthethwa, a gifted South African gospel singer, songwriter, and musician, has made a significant impact in the music industry. Born on November 25, 1987, as Khayelihle Nkosinathi Mthethwa in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal, he possesses remarkable talent as a composer and multi-instrumentalist.

Known for winning the 8th season of Idols South Africa in 2012, Khaya is also a member of the esteemed gospel group, Joyous Celebration, which enjoys popularity in South Africa and across the African continent.

Early Life and Education:

Growing up in a musical environment, Khaya was influenced by his parents, pastors Themba and Lulu Mthethwa, who instilled in him a passion for music. Despite his parents’ initial reservations, Khaya pursued his love for music after completing high school.

While studying project management at university, he remained actively involved in church as a music director for the choir. However, realizing his true calling, Khaya enrolled at the Durban University of Technology to study jazz performance, honing his skills as a vocalist and instrumentalist. In 2017, he released his debut solo album, titled RISE.


Khaya Mthethwa made his mark on the music scene in 2012 by lending his vocals as a backing vocalist on Ntokozo Mbambo’s album, Filled. That same year, he participated in Idols South Africa, showcasing his versatility across different musical genres. With his exceptional talent, he emerged as the winner of the competition, garnering over 80% of the public votes. In 2013, Khaya joined the Kwa-Zulu Natal choir for the TV competition The Clash of the Choirs, emerging as the victorious team.

Khaya’s musical abilities span various genres such as gospel, pop, jazz, and R&B. He is a self-taught musician, proficient in playing the keyboard, guitar, drums, and percussion. Additionally, Khaya is a talented songwriter and wrote most of the songs featured in his debut album, For You. Beyond music, he has also ventured into hosting, serving as the host of Gospel Alive, a TV show that premiered in 2013 on Multichoice DSTV’s Mzansi magic channel.

Personal Life:

In his personal life, Khaya Mthethwa tied the knot with Miss South Africa 2016, Ntandoyenkosi Kunene, in a traditional wedding ceremony held on December 2, 2017, in Mpumalanga. However, on December 24, 2019, the couple announced their divorce on social media platforms, citing challenges faced during their two-year marriage.
