After completing his law degree, Elder joined the Cleveland law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey. In 1980, he established Laurence A. Elder and Associates, which focused on the legal executive search market. However, Elder stopped actively running the company in 1987, though he remained its owner until 1995.

During his career, Elder ventured into various media roles. He co-hosted a television program called “Fabric” in 1988 and later hosted the PBS program “National Desk” alongside Fred Barnes and Laura Ingraham in 1997. Elder moderated “Redefining Racism: Fresh Voices From Black America” and criticized Title IX in the book “Title IX and Women in Sports: What’s Wrong With This Picture?”

Notably, Elder received a Los Angeles Area Emmy Award in 2000 for his program “Making Waves – LAUSD KCAL-TV News.” He also hosted the courtroom drama “Moral Court” and the syndicated discussion show “The Larry Elder Show.”

“The Larry Elder Show” gained immense popularity during his tenure as an evening talk radio program on KABC from 1994 until December 2008. He later started a daily live podcast and webcast in December 2009 and returned to KABC in September 2010.
