At the age of six, his family returned to the United States, settling in Norwood, Massachusetts, in 1995, and later in Milton, Massachusetts, in 2000. Unfortunately, Jidenna’s father passed away in 2010.

Jidenna’s passion for music began early in his life. In high school, he co-founded the rap group Black Spadez and honed his skills as a producer, arranger, and songwriter. Jidenna’s debut album was a final project with Black Spadez at Milton Academy, where he graduated in 2003. He then pursued higher education and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity from Stanford University in 2008.

Career:

Following his graduation, Jidenna embarked on his music career while simultaneously working as a teacher. He moved between Los Angeles, Oakland, Brooklyn, and Atlanta, gaining experience and refining his craft. His talent caught the attention of Janelle Monáe, leading to a record deal with her Wondaland Records label, which is distributed through Epic Records.

Under Wondaland Records, Jidenna collaborated with various artists such as Roman GianArthur, St. Beauty, Deep Cotton, and Janelle Monáe herself. In 2015, he released his first official song, “Classic Man,” featuring GianArthur. The song received significant airplay and debuted at number 49 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.

Another notable collaboration was with Janelle Monáe on the song “Yoga,” which was released in March 2015. Jidenna’s talent earned him a nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 58th Grammy Awards. He also won the title for best new artist at the 2015 Soul Train Music Awards.

Jidenna’s debut studio album, titled “The Chief,” was released on February 17, 2017. The album cover pays homage to Boz Scaggs’ Middle Man album. In 2019, he released his second studio album, “85 to Africa,” featuring songs like “Sufi Woman” and “Tribe.” Throughout his musical journey, Jidenna has been influenced by artists like KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, and the Nigerian Highlife music genre.
